HOW TO CLEAN BIKER LEATHER

Cleaning leather can be risky due to the fact that it may alter the color or appearance of the leather.  Always, always, always, test the cleaning products to be used on an inconspicuous area of the leather to be cleaned to see if it will change the color of the leather.  If the item is one of a set (i.e.: gloves or boots), always treat both items the same in order to maintain a color match.

Whenever in doubt, consult a leather cleaning professional.  However, not all dry cleaners know how to correctly clean leather.  Ask around to find someone who has had their leather professionally cleaned and was happy with the results.

Most of the time, you can clean your leather yourself.  Keep in mind that the instructions that follow are only for cleaning smooth finished leather; not unfinished leather or suede.  One way to know whether or not your leather is finished is that water will bead on finished leather and will leave a spot on unfinished leather.

First, put a small amount of a gentle moisturizing soap (i.e.: Dawn Dish Soap) on a damp cloth and bring it to a light lather.  Without putting excess water on the leather, rub the damp cloth on the leather and wipe away the lather with a fresh damp cloth.  Next, polish the leather with a clean dry towel.  Once the item is completely dry, you may waterproof and protect it with mink oil or silicone spray.  Always test the product on an inconspicuous area as these products may darken your leather.

When storing your leather, keep in mind that leather is a natural fabric and as such, it needs to breathe.  Never store your leather in a plastic bag and always store your leather at room temperature.  Storing your leather in an area that is too wet, too dry, too hot or too cold may cause damage to your leather.

If properly treated, your biker leather will last a long time.
